Established in 2014, the Monocle Foundation is a philanthropic educational trust aiming to offer tertiary-level scholarships for previously disadvantaged black females. The foundation has positively transformed the lives of numerous South African women and is continuously expanding its impact with aspirations to become a leading scholarship provider throughout the country.

We are dedicated to investing in women and enabling them to achieve their full potential by providing them with the tools they need to succeed. This includes improving access to education, promoting financial literacy, providing essential resources, and advocating for gender equality.

The Monocle Foundation Bursary Programme is committed to supporting women of colour who have limited to no funding, and who are currently studying in a variety of graduate and postgraduate fields.

Application eligibility

 

  • Black females with limited to no funding

  • South African students who are in their second year of study, or higher

Application requirements

 
  • A letter addressed to the Trustees of The Monocle Foundation Trust including:

    • Information and background of the applicant

    • Field of study

    • Career ambitions

    • Motivation for bursary

  • Latest CV

  • Certified copy of South African ID

  • Copy of academic record – up to date and stamped by the university

  • Copy of graduate degree (for graduates)

  • Copy of grade 12 academic certificate

  • Breakdown of funds required, including tuition fees, study support and books, accommodation, and subsistence allowance

Application process

  Step 1: Screening  Telephonic screening with the Trust Administrator
Step 2: Meet and Greet A personal meeting with The Trust Administrator to get to know you.
Step 3: Trustee Interview One-on-one interview with one of the Trustees to better understand you
Step 4: Finalisation Confirmation provided from the Trustees as to whether you are successful
 
All applications must be submitted to The Monocle Foundation Trust before 8 November 2024.
Candidates will be shortlisted by the Trustees.

All applicants will receive feedback on the outcome of their application.

  BURSARY APPLICATION FOR GRADUATE AND POST GRADUATE STUDIES
 
The Monocle Foundation Trust has been formed to provide bursaries to South African students studying towards a degree or postgraduate degree. The Trust specifically targets previously disadvantaged black female students currently enrolled (from second year or above) in fields such as, but not limited to, Finance, Mathematics, Accounting, Economics, Computer Science and Medicine. The ideal candidate will not have an alternative bursary and will use the funding towards their 2025 studies. We invite students that fit the above criteria to submit their applications to become a beneficiary of The Monocle Foundation Trust. The application must include ALL of the following supporting documents to qualify for consideration: 1. A letter addressed to the Trustees of The Monocle Foundation Trust including:
  • Information and background of the applicant
  • Field of study
  • Career ambitions
  • Motivation for bursary
2. Latest CV 3. Certified copy of South African ID 4. Copy of academic record to date stamped by the University 5. Copy of graduate degree (for graduates) 6. Copy of Grade 12 academic certificate 7. Breakdown of 2025 funds required, including tuition fees, study support and books, accommodation, and subsistence allowance. Candidates will be shortlisted by the Trustees and contacted by November 2024, after which the successful applicants will be chosen before mid-December 2024. All applicants will receive feedback on the outcome of their application. The beneficiaries are under no obligation to pay back or work back the funds to the Trust. Beneficiaries will be obligated to provide regular updates to the Trust regarding their studies and progression and provide their final academic results to the Trust. The Trustees however would appreciate feedback on where the beneficiaries will be starting their careers.
