3. External Bursaries
- 2025 Thebe Foundation Dr EJ Mabuza Scholarship:
The Dr EJ Mabuza Scholarship Fund was established in 2016 in honour of Dr Enos Mabuza, and the critical role he played in the establishment of Thebe Investment Corporation together with Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Beyers Naude.
The initiative aims to support financially needy students at higher education institutions, thereby contributing to the development of graduates who are confident and proud of their African identity and heritage, academically and socially adept, and equipped with the skills and competencies enabling them to become professionals in their fields.
The bursary covers the following expenses:
-
- Tuition fees, textbooks, accredited accommodation costs, meals and a transport allowance for those students living at home.
- The Thebe Foundation provides support services at all stages of this programme, to ensure that all recipients are supported in their academic efforts and successfully graduate at the end of their studies.
- The bursary DOES NOT cover historical debt (ie, incurred before 2025). Discovery that an applicant has historical debt (even if it’s after they are given an offer/pledge or bursary contract), can lead to a termination or cancellation of the bursary (at the Bursary providers sole discretion).
- Successful Applicants will be required to terminate any other funding (NSFAS, etc) if they accept the bursary offer.

Set your dreams in motion with a Standard Bank Student Loan Without Surety
Standard Bank is offering students an opportunity to get a Student Loan Without Surety – meaning you do not require a guardian or parent to be able to take up this loan. We understand that it may be stressful looking for funding, and that is why you need a bank that backs you.
Minimum Criteria
- You must be a South African citizen.
- Your Gross Household Income must be less than R600 000 per annum.
- 3rd Year students and upwards within Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematic, Commerce, Health Sciences and 5th Year students in Medicine.
- Open to existing Standard Bank Transactional Account holders. You may apply for one using our digital and other banking channels if you don’t have one
- Study at one of our participating universities
How does it work?
- The loan maximum is R120 000 per annum, which can be used to cover tuition, accommodation, books and study equipment.
- There is no expectation of repayment on the loan while you are studying. However, you will be expected to start repaying the loan six months after completing your studies or as soon as you secure employment. Of course, it will be to your advantage to reduce your balance by making some payments while studying.
- Monthly interest and service fees will be charged from the loan’s inception and will be added to the outstanding balance.
- This loan can cover your existing university student debt up to R80 000 for each previous year that may be preventing you from completing your studies
- Competitive interest rates apply.

Payable fees
All students must be registered annually as provided in the General Academic Rules, the Statute of the North-West University and the relevant provisions of the Higher Education Act.
Annually, more or less at the beginning of February, it is Registration time for students.
Ease your registration next year by paying your minimum payable fees early (December or January) into the University’s bank account. Also make sure your outstanding University account is fully settled, because you will not be permitted to register for next year if any fees for the year are still outstanding. Also take note that no respite will be granted for payment of the minimum fees payable.
International students must pay the full amount for their proposed study and relevant costs in advance before registration can be finalised.
